Melbourne's Golden Mile Heritage Trail
Through a recent innovative partnership with Museum Victoria the Professional Tour Guide Association of Australia (PTGAA) signed an agreement to administer the Museum’s iconic guided walking tour that follows along the Golden Mile Heritage Trail.
The trail , which starts at the Immigration Museum and finishes at the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building and Melbourne Museum in the Carlton Gardens, is marked with a series of brass discs set into the cities pavements.
It traces the development of Melbourne from a small isolated agricultural settlement to become one of the world’s most significant cities and focuses on the wealth created by gold.
The guides who lead the walks are members of the PTGAA who have undergone a specialised training programme provided by Museum Victoria. They must also accept the special terms and conditions laid down by the Museum, hold a current First Aid Certificate, be covered by Tour Guide Liability Insurance and be prepared to conduct at least three walks each month.
Guides who have successfully completed the training and been accredited by the Museum to lead the walks are then entitled to wear the Melbourne Golden Mile badge of recognition.
On weekdays the tour covers the route from the Immigration Museum to the Town Hall and at
weekends from the Town Hall to the Royal Exhibition Building
The tours starts daily (except Good Friday and Christmas Day) from the Visitor Centre in Federation Square at 10.00a.m.
